RYAN KOONCE, MD

Fellowship-Trained Hip and Knee Replacement Specialist

Dr. Koonce is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon that specializes in hip and knee replacement surgeries.  His practice focuses on adult patients who have been affected by injury or arthritis and want to return to an active lifestyle.  He has performed thousands of successful hip and knee replacement procedures utilizing minimally invasive techniques, modern technology, and advanced peri-operative care.  He has a special interest in direct anterior hip replacements and uses this approach for all primary and revision hip surgeries.

At the University of Colorado, Dr. Koonce has piloted several patient care programs including CU's first rapid-recovery and outpatient joint replacement initiatives.  He is a leader in quality and process improvement, and is actively involved in research and teaching.  He received the University of Colorado Hospital's Clinical Quality and Patient Safety Award in 2022.

RESEARCH

Dr. Koonce is investigating ways to improve joint replacement surgery and maximize patient outcomes with preoperative optimization, surgical techniques, advanced technologies, and recovery protocols.  He manages the research database for the Adult Reconstruction Division in the Department of Orthopedics.

  • The effects of various physical therapy interventions on outcomes (partnering with Rehabilitation Sciences and Physical Therapy Programs at CU)

  • Perioperative antibiotics and outcomes in joint replacement surgery

  • Patient perceptions on joint replacement surgery
  • Modifiable risk factors and their effects on outcomes of surgery
  • The importance of patient education as a preoperative intervention

PERSONAL INTERESTS

Dr. Koonce is a Colorado native and lifelong athlete.  He grew up playing tennis and basketball competitively and developed a passion for endurance sports later in life.  He is a USA Triathlon age-group All-American, age-group Team USA member for triathlon, Ironman finisher, and USAT Aquabike (swim-bike) National Champion.  He also races competitively in road cycling and individual time trials.  In all life pursuits, his motivation and purpose are derived from his wife and two children.  With them, he loves to ski, hike, ride bikes, watch movies, cook, and travel.
